How important is music to you? And do you think you experience music differently than sighted people?

"Music is incredibly important to me. I can completely lose myself in it. When I listen to music, I imagine that I’m playing the instrument myself. I listen to different music genres. For example, I love Rock, Metal, Singer-songwriter music, Jazz, and Progressive Rock. Depending on my mood, I adjust my music choices.

Music is important to many people, so I don't think blind and visually impaired people experience music differently. But perhaps we have a better ear for detail because our most dominant sense is absent."

Hans, you also have a radio show, how do you approach that?

"That's right, I have my own radio show at Omroep Berg en Dal. Here, I play my favorite music and artists, and I also share some information about them with the listeners.

Every week, I dive into different music styles and select an artist or album. I build a whole show around it, using the album or related music to enhance the experience.

During the show, I use my computer screen with a magnifying glass to look up information about the artist, so I can share interesting facts during the broadcast.

What I like is that when I make the show, I listen to the music through my headphones, which makes it feel even more intense than through speakers."

How do you discover new music?

"Nowadays, it’s much easier. I used to discover new music through friends and CDs at the library. When I saw a beautiful CD cover or a name that caught my attention, I would take it with me.

Now, it’s much easier with apps like Spotify and Shazam. But I also discover new music through Facebook groups where people share what they like to listen to. Then I research more about the music or the artist.

My colleagues at muZIEum know about my radio show. Recently, my colleague Esther came to me and told me that she had been to a concert by Midland. The band plays country music, and I immediately went to listen to it, and I really liked it!

I then look up everything the band has released and listen to the songs a lot. And it might just happen that I build a show around it for my radio program! It's so nice that colleagues share things like this with me.”
