On the way to a visibly better world

With pride, we look back on 2024, the year in which, thanks to the support of subsidies, funds, and sponsors, we were able to officially kick off the renovation plans for muZIEum in 2025.

We welcomed more than 42,000 visitors, a 6.8% increase compared to 2023. Additionally, our team grew to 55 blind and visually impaired employees, a 37.5% increase compared to last year.

A new muSEEum in 2025

In June, we were pleasantly surprised with a generous cheque from the VriendenLoterij, allowing us to begin preparations for the renovation of muSEEum. In November, we received the fantastic news that the municipality of Nijmegen would also support this project.

With these plans, we are renewing muSEEum and creating an inspiring exhibition. In addition to our well-known expeditions, we will add an exhibition that provides visitors with insights into current topics surrounding accessibility and inclusion. At the same time, we will improve the accessibility of both the building and the expeditions, allowing us to welcome a broader and more diverse audience, aiming to grow to 65,000 visitors per year. We are creating an accessible experience for visitors and building a sustainable infrastructure to make the museum future-proof.

Our gratitude goes out to the VriendenLoterij, the Municipality of Nijmegen, and all our other partners: Stichting Volksbelang, Rabo Foundation, Groene Metropoolregio, Trioliet, LSBS, Bartiméus Fonds, Visio Foundation, Cultuurfonds, Anton Jurgensfonds, Diorapthe.

Museum association

With the new exhibition, we will be able to welcome visitors with a Museumkaart from the reopening at the end of 2025. Membership in the Museum Association highlights our ambition to be accessible to a wide and diverse audience.

muSEEum works!

In 2024, our team grew to 55 blind and visually impaired employees, an increase of 37.5% compared to 2023, with many young new colleagues.

Together, we continue to work on improving the digital accessibility of our systems, with the goal of ensuring equal access to information for everyone. Additionally, we invest in targeted development and training programs for all our team members.

muSEEum on location

This year, muZIEum was active not only in Nijmegen but also at over 30 companies and organizations. With our workshops, where participants experienced what it’s like to have limited vision, we helped them delve deeper into accessibility and inclusion.

We were guests at Blue Billywig, the Dutch Insurance Association, the Social Domain Advisory Board in Oss, Leiden University, and many more places.

These two projects were made possible thanks to the support of ZonMW, Fonds NutsOhra, KSBS, and the GAK Institute.

Social Enterprise Code and Social Enterprise

We are not only a cultural organization but also a social enterprise. In 2024, we achieved certification according to the Social Enterprise Code. This allows companies with an SROI (Social Return on Investment) obligation to socially procure products or services from us, directly contributing to employment for blind and visually impaired people. With our expeditions, we offer an inclusive view of the world and create more jobs for the 350,000 blind and visually impaired people in the Netherlands, of whom only 29% are employed.
